Old First Baptist Chruch Ornament

Hephzibah Jenkins Townsend (1780 – 1847) took the lead in establishing this church. She and Bella, a slave, raised money through the sale of baked goods, and the efforts of a “Female Mite Society”. In 1845, the membership included Hephzibah, her daughter, and 461 enslaved African Americans. Today’s congregation worships in the New First Baptist Church, but preserves this church as a part of their heritage.
